Music for Wellbeing
I work with young people, disabled people, and adults experiencing mental health challenges, helping them find wellbeing through music making. Whether it’s wild or gentle improvisations, collaborative songwriting, or creating experimental soundscapes, I love finding what sparks joy and connection for each person I work with.
I’ve been facilitating creative workshops for 15 years now, and I’ve learned that everyone has their own way of expressing themselves - my job is to create the space and provide the musical tools for that to happen.
My Background
Over the past couple of years, I’ve been delivering music workshops mostly through my work with Bristol Beacon’s inclusive music programmes. It’s been incredible getting to work with such diverse groups of people and witnessing the powerful transformations music can bring about in them.
I embarked on a mental health training journey, gaining a level 2 Counselling certificate, a level 1 certificate in TEAM CBT and a certificate in coaching. These all inform my work as a music practitioner, enabling me to reach a deeper understanding and connection with the people I work with - to truly listen to their music; their songs that yearn to be heard.
I’m also a professional composer - for the last 10 years I’ve been creating music for animations and cartoons (including Cartoon Network’s Clarence and The Fungies). The constant variety of musical styles needed for weekly episodes means I can now create music in nearly any genre that’s thrown at me. This is a great benefit when working with participants - I can meet people where their musical interests are, whether they’re into hip-hop, folk, electronic music, or something completely experimental.
How I Work
I bring together my passion for music with my formal training in counselling and mental health support to create a safe space for exploration and self-expression. I’m also a seasoned improviser - not just musical improvisation, but clowning and physical theatre too. This enables me to roll with whatever happens in a session, staying present, and meeting people exactly where they are emotionally and creatively.
Making music has helped me through difficult times, and there’s nothing I love more than sharing its benefits with others. Every session is about finding outlets for expression, fostering communication and connection - but most importantly, it’s about having fun and experiencing joy together through music.
